Remember that song by Huey Lewis and the News “Workin’ For A Livin’?” Was that a great song or what? Well, working for a living may NOT be a great thing to do if you’re running your own home business. Or is it? I’m going to focus on the other side of the coin here because working for a living JUST might be an option that you’ll want to consider. Let me explain.
First of all, let me start out by saying that any home business you run is work. I don’t care what it is. There is no such thing as sitting on your backside and doing nothing. If that’s what you’re looking for, you have a LONG wait because it doesn’t exist.
Having said that, there is work and there is work.
For example, a typical home business that I don’t consider “working” for a living is selling digital informational products, especially if you create the products yourself. The business model is actually quite simple and mostly hands off ONCE you get it going.
Typically, you’ll start by creating the product, sales page and all other materials you’ll need to sell the product. You’ll get yourself a payment processor so you can take payments. PayPal is a pretty common option these days. Afterwards, you’ll recruit affiliates to help you sell the product.
After you have done all that and the ball starts rolling, it pretty much continues to roll as long as you focus on the promotional end of things, which is nowhere near an 8 hour a day job. In fact, some forms of promotion, such as Adwords, you can just set and forget as long as you keep an occasional eye on your stats.
But there is a downside to that kind of model. You MUST make sales in order to make money. If you don’t make sales, you don’t get paid. In other words, there is no guarantee of an income with this type of business model. Now, most home business owners understand this going in and don’t mind. Besides, it sure beats working for a boss.
Well what if I told you that there was a third option? You work for yourself, but instead of trying to sell products, you sell yourself.
One of the very first things I did online was sell myself as a content writer. I would write articles for people or whatever it was they want. I did pretty well with it too. In fact, I remember my first check for over $1,200. It was quite exciting. Yes, I had to work in order to make that money. If I didn’t write, I didn’t get paid.
However, unlike working for a boss, I set my own hours. I took on the assignments that I wanted and passed on the rest. I didn’t have to punch a clock. And if I was REALLY ambitious, I could take on MORE work and make even MORE money. With a job, it doesn’t matter how much you work, especially if you’re salary.
So, as you can see, there is another option. Freelancing is a great way to make a part time or even full time income without having to worry about selling things.
